Easy Beef Tater Tots for Weaning Babies
Share
When my son was around 9 months old, he suddenly got bored of solids and went on a bit of a food strike. He started refusing all his purées and plain food and I was honestly struggling to figure out what to feed him.
One day, I thought of making these beef tater tots with a little bit of everything, carbohydrates, protein, fibre, and lots of vitamins. The trick? Adding some AVIA Whitebait Powder to make them more savoury and flavourful!
Think of it as a baby-friendly version of begedil.
To my surprise, he finished 4 tater tots in one sitting! I was so happy to see him enjoying his food again, and these have been our go-to ever since.
The best part? Everything can be steamed and mashed together in one plate. Perfect for busy mums like me who don't always have the luxury of time to cook!
Ingredients:
- 1 tsp AVIA Whitebait Powder
- 2 potatoes
- 0.5 cup minced meat
- 3 tbsp peas
Beef Tater Tots Recipe
Here's how I make these little tots for my toddler. I've included step-by-step photos below so you can follow along too!
Step 1: Steam the ingredients
Steam the beef, potatoes, and peas until everything is cooked through and tender. This makes the ingredients easier to mash and mix together.

Step 2: Mash everything together
Mash the potatoes and peas until you get a soft texture. You can adjust the texture depending on your child's chewing skills and feeding stage.

Step 3: Add AVIA Whitebait Powder
Sprinkle in some AVIA Whitebait Powder to add a savoury flavour to the mixture.

Step 4: Shape into little tots
Shape the mixture into small oval patties. I like making them oval because they're easier for little hands to grasp, giving my son a chance to practise his grasp and self-feeding skills too.

Step 5: Fry until golden
Pan fry the patties until they're golden on the outside. Let them cool to a safe temperature before serving, and make sure the inside is cooked through and the texture is suitable for your little one.

Step 6: Ready to serve!
And that's it! These beef tater tots are great for little ones who are exploring finger foods, and even their older siblings can enjoy them too. No need to prepare separate meals for everyone!

Tip for busy mummy!
Did you know that peas are a good source of fibre and plant-based protein? I love adding them to my kids' meals because they bring a natural sweetness and a nice texture to the dish.
Also, these tater tots are great for meal prep, especially on days when you don't have time to cook.
You can keep them in the fridge for 1–2 days, or freeze them for later. I would recommend freezing the patties on a tray first before transferring them into a ziplock bag, so they don't stick together.
When you're ready to serve, reheat them in the air fryer or microwave, then let them cool to a safe eating temperature. If your little one is going through a solids strike like mine did, maybe give these a try. Sometimes, a little change in flavour and texture can make mealtimes more exciting!
